Job Description:

Position Goal:  While under the direct supervision of the Principal, the Teacher will provide sound and consistent instruction to students, modifying curriculum as needed, to support academic growth that enables each student to reach their full potential.

  • Hold a valid Arizona certification in Special Education in either SLD or Cross Categorical
  • Highly Qualified as required by IDEA 2004
  • Master Degree in Special Education (preferred)
  • Knowledge of Arizona Special Education statutes and IDEA law
  • Knowledge of sound, research-based and approved instructional practices for students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of classroom-based assessments to drive instruction
  • Knowledge of basic special education procedures and deadlines
  • Skill in both oral and written communication
  • Skill in modifying grade level Arizona College and Career Ready Standards to the functional level of each student
  • Skill in providing direct instruction and interventions at the functional level of each student
  • Skill in using computers, SMARTboard and other equipment and materials to supplement instructional presentation
  • Ability to assess student needs through academic assessments
  • Ability to write goals and implement instructional strategies based on assessments
  • Ability to develop and implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, administration and the community
  • Ability to collaborate and work in teams
  • Ability, if appropriate, to maintain current NCI, First Aid, and CPR certification
  • Ability to create and update special education records using online IEP system
  • Ability to utilize assistive technology
  • Ability to supervise and direct paraprofessionals


Other:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. 

  1. Supports the Mission, Vision and goals of J.O. Combs Unified School District
  2. Plans and implements direct instruction in all subject areas as needed per IEP
  3. Maintains the physical environment of the classroom for organization and maximum instructional opportunities
  4. Supervises paraprofessionals
  5. Trains paraprofessionals to support students in general education classes both academically and behaviorally and gather data on goals
  6. Instructs individuals and groups
  7. Monitors student progress
  8. Assists in conducting functional behavior assessments/analysis
  9. Creates and implement behavior plans
  10. Creates classroom system for students to gain rewards for positive behavior
  11. Collaborates as needed with outside agencies serving your students
  12. Observes students in general education and other settings for the purpose of proposing interventions/accommodations
  13. Works as a team with the District mental health provider for the betterment of students
  14. Tracks data on monitoring and on IEP goals
  15. Adapts or Modifies curriculum as needed for appropriate instructional level of students
  16. Follow special education department procedures for developing, holding, and turning in student documentation including, but not limited to, IEPs, MET reports, Progress notes, and report cards
  17. Maintains effective contact with parents
  18. Administers, scores and writes reports for achievement testing when appropriate
  19. Collaborates with general education teachers having students on IEPs in their classes
  20. Participates in Professional Learning Committees when appropriate
  21. Ensures appropriate accommodations are in place for general education classroom teacher to implement
  22. Develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student
  23. Conducts IEPs in “real time”
  24. Administers assessments to students on case load, included but not limited to: STARS, DIBELS, Career Inventories, state-wide test
  25. If appropriate, develops transition plans outlining specific steps to prepare students for post-secondary study
  26. Participates in professional development in the district and outside of the district when appropriate
  27. Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required
  28. May be required to participate in student’s meetings which occur beyond the staff’s work assignment schedule
