DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This position is required to meet the Head Start Initiative for Mentor/Coach, to maintain compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards, to improve children’s educational, physical and social outcomes, to improve School Readiness and Family Engagement outcomes, enhance staff skills and Program quality. This position is responsible for daily supervision of the assigned Head Start Center classroom activities for children’s progress and compliance to the Head Start Performance Standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
·Mentor Classroom Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Substitutes and Volunteers in all aspects of early literacy, language and cognitive development according to Program’s use of Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies GOLD, along with the inclusion of specific cultural requirements to the curriculum. Assist with lesson plan writing and classroom activities/experiences/enrichment. Help staff provide rich early learning experiences for children.
·Supervise assigned Center-based staff on a day-to-day basis to ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and Program requirements. Write and conduct performance evaluations as assigned.
·Monitor Center-based Teacher Team and provide verbal and written reports and feedback based on observations and discussions with staff to Education Coordinator and Head Start Director.
·Maintain accurate and current records for all areas of responsibility, meet regularly with Coordinators/Director, and report to Policy Council, Parent Committees and Tribal Council as appropriate.
·Provide/facilitate training opportunities for staff, substitutes, volunteers, families, and Community.
·Administer developmental screenings and assessments for Head Start children in coordination with Education and Disabilities Coordinators, as appropriate/needed.
·Participate with all staff members to recruit, select, and enroll students and perform other duties as assigned.
·Participate in Community-based activities such as parades, commemorative events, meetings, conferences, and trainings as assigned.
·Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
·Knowledge and experience in classroom management.
·Considerable knowledge of the economic, educational and social problems of Native Americans.
·Knowledge of the characteristic group behavior of pre-school children and special needs children.
·Ability to instruct and motivate pre-school children and motivate staff and parents.
·Ability to plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.
·Ability to resolve children’s problems with patience and sympathy.
·Ability to use audio-visual teaching aids, computers and other office equipment effectively.
·Ability to participate in on-going training.
·Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the public.
·Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education, Child & Family Studies, or closely related field with minimum of 24 credit hours in Early Childhood Education or Child Development, preferred. Early Education experience required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
·Current Food Handler Certification (i.e., GRIC, ServSafe, etc.) or obtain within 60 days of employment and must be maintained throughout employment.
·Maintain current CPR & First Aid Certification or obtain certification within 60 days of employment.
·Must pass an Initial Health Examination and a TB skin test; provide proof/results, including updated immunization record prior to hire date.
·Copy of current Fingerprint Clearance Card must be provided when applying for this position.
·Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment. Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.
·Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.
·Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.
·Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
