Job Description:
The classroom Teacher is responsible for all aspects of academic instruction to students ranging in the applicable age ranges for the grade levels from Kindergarten through the Eighth Grade.
Teaches students by selecting, developing, adapting and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques utilizing available resources to provide academic achievement opportunities.
Provides learning experiences in assigned subject areas to develop cognitive, affective and
psychomotor skills that are appropriate to the needs and interests of all the students in the class. Plans techniques and/or methods that will lead students into decision-making, problem-solving skills and targeting and meeting goals for the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
Continuously evaluates individual and group academic progress through the use of criterionreferenced tests, periodic standardized tests, oral tests, and/or other relevant evaluation methods / instructions. Uses alternative instructional methods to meet individual needs for strong academic performance daily. Makes progress reports to parents and confers with parents and other concerned individuals. Maintains required records in accordance with applicable requirements for compliance of current education programs.
Develops and conducts high quality instruction within an environment that provides and promotes opportunities for the students to achieve and develop rapport, interrelationship self-discipline and positive self-image.
Maintains control of assigned class and/or classes and handles discipline independently except for chronic or extreme behavior problems. Counsels individual students within established guidelines, using background information concerning each student to provide an effective instruction / learning cycle as it pertains to student behavior and progress.
Supervises assigned students as scheduled, or provides for their supervision, throughout the academic day and/or activity in order to provide for the safety, health, and welfare of the students.
Participates in educational activities, such as professional workshops, that improve skills for providing better services to the students.
May give work direction to one or more Education Technician.
Provides for the care and use of assigned supplies and equipment.
Performs other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelors’ of Art or Science Degree with a minimum of 24 semester hours in education
courses and 12 semester hours must be in elementary education. Must possess a current AZ
Department of Education Standard Elementary K-8 Certification and AZ Department of Public
Safety Fingerprint Card.
a. Applicable teaching endorsement as required for grade-level and subject matter such as
Early Childhood, Math, Reading, and Structured English Immersion.
2. One (1) year of teaching experience in a K-8 Grade setting.
3. Knowledge and familiarity with the Navajo language, culture, and people is a preferred
qualification;
4. Must have or obtain within 30 days of hire and maintain a current First Aid and CPR
certification; GSA Defensive Driving certification; and Department of the Interior
LEARN Security Awareness Training.
5. Must have a valid and unrestricted Arizona driver’s license and provide proof of a
favorable Motor Vehicle Record;
6. Must successfully complete all interviews, background checks, and fingerprint clearance
requirements and submit all required employment-related documents and forms; and
7. Applicant’s background checks demonstrate successful, positive, multi-year employment
and performance of duties at each of applicant’s last three (3) employment positions or
previous five (5) years of employment, whichever is greater.
An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience which provides the capabilities
to perform the described duties may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
a. Knowledge of federal regulations for the education of Indian children and home living
programs.
b. Knowledge of DCS’ mission, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
c. Knowledge of BIE SCAN policy and procedures.
d. Knowledge of Native American Student Information System (NASIS) reporting requirements,
software and processes.
e. Knowledge of Federal travel requirements, regulations and policies.
f. Ability to maintain effective relations with supervisors and employees.
g. Knowledge of personal computer software packages including word processing and
presentation applications.
h. Skill in researching, compiling, and preparing reports, board packets, and related materials.
i. Skill in communicating courteously and professionally, both orally and in writing, while
working with the School Board members, staff, parents, and a variety of federal, state and local
agencies.
j. Skill in operating a variety of office equipment including personal computers, copiers, FAX,
telephone, calculator, and typewriter.
k. Skill in establishing and maintaining filing and record systems.
l. Skill in working in an environment subject to frequent interruptions, quickly changing
priorities, and occasionally limited directions.
m. Must maintain strict level of confidentiality pertaining to school records
