Job Title:                   Instrumental Music Teacher/Band Director
Location:                   Apache Junction High School/Cactus Junior High School
Reports To:               Principal
Classification:           202 day Full-Time, Exempt
Salary:                       *$46,700 - $80,904 (Base salary based on verified contracted teaching experience.)

 
Job Goal
Ensure that the AJHS concert groups and marching band acquire the technical skills and positive attitudes that will contribute to their development as capable, mature, and responsible musicians and citizens. Create a band program that honors the pride of The Marching Prospectors and is in constant pursuit of performances that are superior with distinction in competitions, festivals, and community based performances. 
 
Essential Duties and Functions
 

 

  • Develop students’ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover appropriate band literature styles for school, community, and competitive performances
  • Design and implement a wide variety of appropriate instructional activities for students of varying abilities and talents
  • Teach a variety of vastly different skills on different instruments simultaneously
  • Assesses the mastery of student learning on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning by developing reasonable rules of behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Deliver lessons and facilitate experiences that instill appreciation for and joy in creating all types of music with a wide variety of students
  • Set up, schedule, and run rehearsals outside of the regular school day in preparation for performances
  • Organize and supervise large groups of students in activities outside of school hours and on/off campus
  • Collaborate with colleagues, students, and parents on a regular basis
  • Organize and maintain a large inventory of equipment
  • Be able to do fundamental maintenance on all standard wind and percussion instruments
  • Have a fundamental operational knowledge of audio recording equipment
  • Organize and maintain a large inventory of instructional materials and music library
  • Plan logistics and transportation for 15+ events outside of school per year
  • Plan and organize concerts and other public performances
  • Work to recruit and retain an adequate number of students in proper wind and percussion instrumentation into the instrumental music programs to ensure excellence and to make continued improvement possible
  • Participate in extracurricular assignments as needed
  • Engage in collaborative learning opportunities on and off site to continue to learn and implement current best practice in music education
  • Serve as a resource for feeder school instrumental music programs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a valid Standard Professional PreK-12 Music Education Certificate for the State of Arizona
  • Valid AZ Fingerprint Clearance Card

 
 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an effective music educator and band director
  • Master’s Degree (M.A., M.F.A.) or higher from an accredited four year college or university
  • Track record of building programs that earn high rankings in regional and state competition

 

 
Physical Requirements — Fine Arts Teacher
Positions in this classification typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, sitting, finger or manual dexterity, repetitive finger motion, speaking, hearing, seeing (with correction), focusing ability, or other factors applicable to this job. Employees may be subject to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, and loud noises. Duties may require employee to drive a vehicle, be exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat or cold, wind and rain. Employees may be required to lift or exert up to 30 pounds of force to move objects occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects frequently. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
